Special NeedsSensory-Friendly Events for Kids with Special Needs

We welcome all children who meet program guidelines to our events. However, we understand that some kids have special needs that make attending certain programs challenging.

Listed below are sensory-friendly movie screenings and encounters with outside performers. Also listed are programs that, while not designed specifically for kids with special needs, may have particular appeal.

Sensory-Friendly Events

  • Book Buddies

    When: Thursday, July 24, 2014 - 7:00 PM - 7:00 PM
    Where: Youth Program Room

    Older children pair up with younger ones to share books, crafts, and fun. Older buddies should be entering grades 6 and up; younger buddies should be ages 4 to 7. Registration begins each Monday morning and continues until that week’s program is full.

  • Rangers in Training: Mammals

    When: Friday, July 25, 2014 - 3:30 PM - 5:00 PM
    Where: Youth Program Room

    Drop in any time between 3:30 and 5:00 to learn about Illinois mammals through their pelts, skulls, tracks--even their scat! (Hint: that's ranger talk for poop.) Make a simple craft to take home. All ages.

  • Stuffed Animal Pet Show

    When: Monday, July 28, 2014 - 3:30 PM - 5:00 PM
    Where: Youth Program Room

    Gussy up your favorite stuffed friend and drop it off at the library for our Stuffed Animal Pet Show! Then, everyone is invited to admire the plush pals and vote for their favorites. For all ages. Drop-off will take place Sunday, July 27, from 2:00-5:00, and Monday, July 28, from 9:00-2:00. One entry per person, please.

  • Noodles the Wonder Dog: Sensory-Friendly Performance

    When: Wednesday, July 30, 2014 - 4:45 PM - 5:15 PM
    Where: Auditorium

    Be prepared to be amazed by this shelter mutt turned local celebrity and international trick champion! For children ages 3-18 with special needs. Siblings welcome. Registration starts July 16 for Wilmette & Kenilworth residents and July 23 for nonresidents. Sponsored by the Friends of the Wilmette Library.

  • K-9 Reading Buddies

    When: Wednesday, July 30, 2014 - 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM
    Where: Youth Program Room

    Sign up for a 15 minute slot to read your favorite stories to a trained therapy dog. Grades 1–5. Wilmette and Kenilworth residents only. K-9 Reading Buddies of the North Shore is a Therapy Dogs International Children Reading to Dogs Program. Registration begins June 4 for all dates; visit the Youth Desk or call 847-256-6945. Limit 2 dates per child.

  • Drive-In Movie

    When: Thursday, August 14, 2014 - 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM
    Where: Auditorium

    Let's recreate the drive-in experience for our youngsters. Make your own car out of a cardboard box and then sit back and relax while we watch some classic cartoons. Each child will be provided with a box and all the supplies necessary to decorate their car. Cookies will be served. Ages 4-7 with an adult. Registration starts July 31 for Wilmette & Kenilworth residents and August 7 for nonresidents.

  • Park �a �Day Challenge: Maple Park

    When: Monday, August 18, 2014 - 11:30 AM - 12:00 PM
    Where: Maple Park

    Join us for an outdoor storytime when you take the Park-a-Day Challenge to play, discover new play spaces, and promote children's unstructured play. In partnership with The Alliance for Early Childhood and area park districts and libraries.

    When: Wednesday, August 20, 2014 - 11:30 AM - 12:00 PM
    Where: Townley Park
