As part of its 2011 One Book, Everybody Reads program, the Wilmette Public Library presented a series of events related to Let the Great World Spin, the 2009 National Book Award winning novel by Colum McCann.

April 16 from 12 - 2 pm: The 2011 "One Book, Everybody Reads" season kicked off. A raffle was held, and the winner received a copy of Let the Great World Spin.

April 25 at 7 pm: Well-known local book discussion facilitator and reviewer Judy Levin led a discussion ofLet the Great World Spin as part of the Wilmette Public Library’s monthly “Fourth Monday Book Club” series.

April 28 at 7 pm: A screening of the award-winning documentary, Man on Wire, was held. The film portrays funambulist Philippe Petit’s high wire walk between New York City’s Twin Towers. Repeated on May 17 at 10:30 am.

May 3 at 7 pm: Community members were invited to enjoy small tastings of “New York Street Food” provided by Corner Cooks/Jerry’s.                                                                                                                            Patron comments:

May 5 at 10 am: Local residents were invited to come for coffee, sweets, and a discussion of Let the Great World Spin, led by one of the library’s Adult Services librarians. Link’s Sweet Bean, 1141 Greenleaf, Wilmette.

May 12 at 7 pm: Steve Bogira, author of Courtroom 302, gave an inside picture of the country’s busiest criminal courthouse when he discussed “Criminal Courts, Chicago Style.” Mr. Bogira has written for the Chicago Tribune and the Chicago Reader and is now the Reader’s political editor.

May 22 at 2 pm: Author Colum McCann visited Wilmette to discuss his novel, Let the Great World Spin, winner of the 2009 National Book Award. Borders Books and Music in Wilmette had books available for purchase and signing at the event. Held at the Wilmette Park District’s Community Recreation Center, 3000 Glenview Road, Wilmette.

June 22, June 29, July 6, and July 13 from 7:00 - 8:30 pm: Noted New Trier High School English teacher John O'Connor conducts a four-session writing workshop at the library. The program will be open to high school students and adults and is limited to 15 participants.
